April 30th is traditionally Queen’s Day in The Netherlands. This year, however, it was an extra special Queen’s Day as Queen Beatrix abdicated after 33 years of service and her eldest son, Prince Willem Alexander was sworn in as the new King Willem Alexander. His Argentinian wife, Maxima, will now be known as Queen Maxima. This historic moment was celebrated in a very big way in the Netherlands. The country turned completely orange. But this year Queensday was not only celebrated in the Netherlands. Our colleagues at the joint-venture KF Bioplants joined the festivities. Read more »

Gerbera breeder and propagator Florist Holland B.V., part of the Royal Hilverda Group, carries on all Gerbera activities of Preesman Plants BV by 15 June 2012 and strengthens its position within the international Gerbera market. Where Florist Holland focuses on specialisation within Gerbera genetics, Preesman does not consider this as its core business any longer. The continuation of the activities fits within the corporate strategy of Florist Holland, focusing on product development and international expansion as the Gerbera specialist. For the future Preesman focuses on decentralisation of breeding activities, concentration on mainly Roses and further positioning of Alstroemeria en Chrysanthemums. Read more »

Four winners with their own unique and creative ideas on growing plants, that is the result of the finale of the Garvinea School Garden Olympics 2012; the growing competition with over 4.400 primary school participants from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Fourty children of the four countries battled for becoming the Best International Garvinea Grower, during an exciting competition at Floriade, World Horticultural Expo, Venlo - the Netherlands. In recent months 4,400 school pupils from Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany have participated in the international Garvinea breeding contest. In early February the children started off to compete with each other in growing the best Garvinea for the grand finale day at Floriade 2012 in Venlo. On Saturday May 5th an international jury full of personalities, including Peter Seabrook, will decide who is this year’s best International Garvinea grower. Read more »

For the 27th consecutive year, the Dutch horticultural industry will be delivering an eye-catching showcase to the millions of television viewers around the world. The floral decoration of the live broadcast during the Easter Mass is a permanent promotion of flowers, trees and plants from the Netherlands.
